Abstract: Editing History Video Essay
This video essay provides an interesting critical reflection on the role of the editor of modern Irish history and women’s history. Special emphasis is placed upon the impact of the digital age on the role of the editor with important aspects explored such as the need for the editor to possess the necessary skills to markup historical texts. The video essay is informed by relevant secondary literature related to the digital humanities and provides an engaging reflection on the role of the editor of history specifically through close examination of works of historical scholarship and digital humanities projects related to the discipline of history.
The video essay is divided into logical sections based on the type of editor and historical material being discussed. It begins with a critical reflection on the role of the traditional historical documentary editor and then discusses the role of the editor of historical documents working to disseminate historical texts in the digital realm. Included in the video essay is a critical reflection on the role of the editor working at an academic press as well as the impact of non-traditional means of disseminating and publishing historical research on the role of the editor. The advantages and disadvantages of changing editorial practices are explored.
